TVlc Quick Setup Instructions

TVlc is a TV remote control where the Video runs on your TV set or Computer Monitor and the App allows you to remote control playback. The well established free open-source Vlc media player fully supports TV Tuners and playback of network streams (http/rtsp) and almost all Video formats including ts files/DVDs/isos. If you want to watch Videos on your Monitor or TV set and have a remote control that allows you to switch between TV Tuner Channels, local Video files, Youtube Videos, DVD Isos, radio stations, or arbitrary network streams, I have written TVlc exactly therefore.

Thank you for using TVlc.

TVlc is a Vlc remote control with Youtube integration. It is currently available in the Google Play Store.

Quick setup guide

  1. Download and install Vlc Media Player on your Desktop Computer or Raspberry Pi (Read this for HW accelerated Vlc on Raspbian).
  2. Start Vlc and go to Tools->Preferences->(show all)->Interface->Main interfaces and activate "Web"
  3. Go to Main interfaces->Lua and Specify a LUA HTTP Password
  4. Restart Vlc

TVlc should now be able to discover your Vlc host if you are connected to same WLAN. You can also add your Vlc Host manually by entering your Desktop Computers IP address in TVlc->Server Overview->Add new Connection and enter the password you specified in for LUA HTTP.

Youtube Video playback

TVlc now does its own Youtube url resolution and is no longer dependent on Vlc. However using Vlc's own video link resolution will be slightly more performant and it won't give you obfuscated titles in your playlist. If you want to use Vlc for video resolution you can still set your preferred video quality as explained in Bandwidth and video resolution.

Custom background image

It is now possible for you to select a custom background image if you get tired of the udjat. Simply go to the preferences and pick from your gallery whatever image you like. Please note that very large images might have performance drawbacks when starting TVlc. You have to restart TVlc to make your background appear.

SSHutdown

I have integrated SSHutdown as a menu option to easily shutdown your PC after you finished watching TV. For this to work you have to install SSHutdown first and select a command to show from within tvlc. SSHutdown also comes in handy in case Vlc crashes. Because it allows you to run any command you like you can simply invoke a script like this on your PC:

#!/bin/bash

# kill all vlc hosts started with extraintf
kill -9 `ps -ef|grep vlc|grep extraintf|awk '{print $2}'`

# restart vlc on display 1.
DISPLAY=:0.1 vlc --extraintf=http --preferred-resolution=360

If you don't want to use it you can deactivate the button in your preferences. You have to restart TVlc to make the menu option appear.

Radio stations

The first time you open radio stations for a given country it might take a while until they are loaded. Find your favorite radio stations and add mark them to appear in front so you have fast access.

Problems - What to do?

If you try to access your Vlc server http interface with your mobile browser. (e.g. http://192.168.0.1:8080) you might receive one of the following errors.

404 Site not found

Cause: You have not activated the Http Interface or your firewall is blocking the request. Try to access your Vlc server from the computer it is running on, NOT your mobile phone. (http://127.0.0.1:8080) If you still get a 404 your server is not running. Otherwise it is probably a firewall issue.

403 Forbidden

Cause: Your Http Interface is running but you have not allowed your WiFi subnet in lua/http/.hosts file. Locate it in the Vlc installation folder and uncomment your WiFi subnet. You have to restart Vlc afterwards.
