Lenovo Thinkpad T510i - 802.11N Fast WiFi on Ubuntu/Mint

Today I made a comparison between MacOS/Windows and Linux Mint Transfer rates on my RaspberryPI 2 driven 802.11N Wifi.

The numbers were roughly like this:

  • Windows: ~30Mbit/s
  • MacOS: ~45Mbit/s
  • LinuxMint: ~25Mbit/s

Now that looked bad for my beloved Linux! I could not accept that. After reading lots of posts like http://askubuntu.com/questions/457986/very-slow-intermittent-wifi-speeds-with-14-04-and-intel-pro-wireless-5100-agn I finally managed to make Linux top the performance list again with > ~60Mbit/s:

mike@mike-ThinkPad-T510 ~ $ iperf -c 192.168.0.1
------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to 192.168.0.1, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 85.0 KByte (default)
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 3] local 192.168.0.134 port 49125 connected with 192.168.0.1 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 73.2 MBytes 61.2 Mbits/sec

The necessary iwlwifi options look like this:

mike@mike-ThinkPad-T510 ~ $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf |grep options
options iwlwifi led_mode=1 # turn blinking led to on
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8 # antenna aggregation
options iwlwifi antenna_coupling=1 # dunno
options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0 # wlan or bt
options iwlwifi amsdu_size_8K=1 # sounds good :)
options iwlwifi swcrypto=1
